This week I received a phone call from a Mr. George Pickard, an elderly gentleman who is no relation to Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the starship Enterprise. George told me that his late wife was a guitarist and teacher who left behind a catalogue of music for solo guitar, music for duets, trios and quartets as well as dedicated teaching materials, exercises and graded pieces/studies.
George wanted the collection of sheet music to go to a good home and kindly offered to let me have Margaret's collection free of charge. Since I was looking for new material and my playing was getting stagnant, this call couldn't have come at a better time and I am deeply grateful to George and Margaret for the wealth of music that I'm now in possession of.
After spending a few days carefully sorting, dusting down and restoring many of the well used and well worn volumes in Margaret's collection, I've finally managed to get down to examining the content in full and have found some absolute gems like the Dance of the Will-O'-the-Wisp by De Falla, Un Sueno la Floresta by Barrios and Campanas Del Alba by Sainz de la Maza. There's also a great little technique book (one of many in the collection) called The Art of Practising by Alice Artzt which has already changed the way I'm practising.
So, thanks again to George and Margaret Pickard! It looks like this summer's sets will heavily feature pieces of music from Margaret's collection!
